At least two associations are throwing their support behind a proposed expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center, recently approved by the Nevada Senate.
Las Vegas is among the most popular destinations for association trade shows in the U.S. and the convention center hosts a number of large events, including the Consumer Technology Association's annual CES. Both CTA and the National Association of Broadcasters have asked the Nevada Legislature to raise hotel room taxes by .5 percent to generate $400 million for the proposed expansion, which is projected to cost $1.4 billion.
"This critical investment will help us grow CES, the world's largest annual business event which is held in Las Vegas every January, and will allow us to continue to bring hundreds of millions of dollars each year into the Las Vegas economy even in the interim while the expansion takes place," said Karen Chupka, CTA senior vice president, CES and corporate business strategy.
LVCC currently has 2 million square feet of exhibit space and nearly 250,000 feet of dedicated meeting space, according to news site Radio Times. The proposed expansion would add 1.4 million additional square feet, including 600,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority runs the center.
"The expansion and renovation of the LVCC is necessary to support the growth of the NAB Show," Ann Marie Cumming, senior vice president of communications for NAB, told the news site.
The Nevada Senate voted Oct. 11 in favor of the tax increase. The proposal is now before the Nevada General Assembly. http://bit.ly/2dPGvc5
